Tough loss at Markham District
Rouge River went into Sunday's game looking for their first win of the league campaign. Coming up against SCSC, they knew it would be tough to get the result against last year's second place finishers. The Black and Reds controlled proceedings early on - with skipper Hikmat and Humza dropping beside a makeshift backline , they played out the back and looked in control. The absence of Ahmed and Zaid meant a brand new back four - with Faisal, Rameez, Fardaus, and Yasir starting the game. Rouge River had several chances to go ahead. Haidar was played in on goal, and stayed up despite a foul, but was denied the shot at the last moment. The team also played in Mahab and Ayman several times, along with Faizan at left-wing, but the final ball was lacking quality in these moments. SCSC got two goals, both from individual errors that were against the run of play. Rouge had the chance to grab one back before half with a wicked freekick from Humza, but the follow-up was scuffed first by Kirk and then Hikmat. A rough day for the team. The second half started positively, as they grabbed a quick goal. After clearing a corner, Haidar laid the ball off to Hikmat in his own half. The central midfielder passed it with the outside of his boot to a rushing Humza, who cooly finished it from outside the box with a rushing goalkeeper. A flurry of chances would follow, created by runs and shots from Ayman, Omair, and Haidar. Unfortunately, the equalizer was out of reach, partially due to injuries and running out of legs. SCSC then grabbed a third with 10 minutes to go. There were positive performances to highlight - Maazin, Faisal, Fardaus and Rameez, and Humza, all had moments worth building on. But overall, the team needs serious introspection. Winless after 3, there is a risk of sliding down and giving the team an impossible task of making playoffs. Next week the league will be off for Canada Day, and the following week presents a unique opportunity with two games in the cup, against Slip City and SCSC. Since these are the two teams Rouge fell to, it will be a great opportunity for the squad to show what they are made of and get revenge. A lot of season left to play, and the quality seen in moments should give the fans some confidence they can turn it around.
